A hangover is the sum of all awful physiological effects after heavy use of drugs. However, hangovers are more popularly used only in alcohol-related withdrawals. It is also our body’s natural defense warning as that our body is harmed or abused by over-indulgence of alcohol. It is natural for a drunken person to have a hangover, but current statistics says that 25% to 30% of drinkers are resistant to hangovers - this maybe a reason why many drinkers often end up into a major fatigue breakdown afterwards. Below are symptoms listed and defined to give more drunkards (and non-drinkers, as well, of course) more information on how they could detect symptoms of veisalgia, the scientific term for hangover.
Physical Symptoms
1. Pain – most common of all symptoms of hangover is pain, particularly headache. Muscle pains and stomach pains are also painful symptoms of a hangover.
2. Fatigue – fatigue and weakness are also evident for people who are experiencing a hangover.
3. Dehydration – a person who is experiencing hangover is prone to dehydration. It is known that people who are drunk excessively have increased urine and sweat production, is vomiting and is experiencing diarrhea. A person who is experiencing a hangover will definitely be very thirsty, will have dry mouth and skin, and have less brain fluid. Ethanol is the alcohol to blame for the drinker’s dehydration.
4. High Blood Pressure – alcohol is also known to produce systolic blood pressure.
5. Irregular Heartbeat – with the rapid increased of blood pressure in the body, an irregular heartbeat, a rapid heartbeat and an increased pulse will surely happen.
6. Gastrointestinal Problems – diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain and flatulence - these are some only of the stomach related problems that a drunken person can experience under the effect of veisalgia.
Mental Symptoms
1. Cognitive and Mood Disturbances – because of the dehydration of the brain, most of our brain functions will not work efficiently under the influence of a hangover. Difficulty in concentration, decreased attention to everything, hungry but is having loss of appetite, tremors, depression, irritability, anxiety, lack of depth perception and sensitivity to light and sound are the most common symptoms under this sub-class.
2. Vertigo – people who are experiencing hangovers feel a sense of the room spinning. This “Spinning Room” effect is still connected to the malfunction of the brain due to dehydration.
3. Dizziness – much as like as vertigo, but slightly lower in effect. This is the relaxing sensation most drinkers feel. But actually, dizziness due to alcohol is evidence of a brain not functioning well.
4. Sleeping Problems – persons under the hangover effect cannot sleep properly or may experience sleep-related problems. It is noted that people experiencing hangovers are having decrease in sleeping hours, decrease of rapid eye movements and increase in slow-wave sleep.
It should also be known to everybody that the harmful and awful effects of hangover will last from 8 to 24 hours. While some would suggest curing or curbing down the effects of hangover, it will still be the best to give ones’ self enough time to rest and not to consume more alcohol (as it will just add more painful hours of veisalgia). To prevent having hangover means to drink moderately.
