Pick a Barcode Reader

Many manufacturers nowadays are bar coding their products for internal auditing and accounting purposes. These enable manufacturers to better study their product statistics, like its sales, supply and demands. For many years, shop owners see this technological advancement as beneficial also to track their sales and services. The emergence of bar coding led to the cadence of production and sales. Bar coding has created a harmonious business relationship between producers and their sellers – producers implant bar codes, sellers read the bar codes.

Therefore, it is a wise business decision for salesmen or shop owners to invest on bar code readers. Most consumer products, if not all, are scanned through the bar code readers upon purchasing. Bar code readers are useful cashier tools to efficiently record all customer purchases into their receipts. If only investors know how to choose which bar code readers fit best in their cashier set up, a long term investment on these tools will be both beneficial to the three of the most important factors of sales: the manufacturers, the sellers and the consumers. Here are some helpful hints to choose a bar code reader:

• Know the device. Further knowledge of the bar code reader will help the shop owners to discern better by comparing other types of reader from their choice. By definition, there are five major kinds of bar code readers:
o The pen type readers
o The slot readers
o Charge Coupled Device readers (or the CCD readers)
o Image readers
o Laser readers

• Know the required or the desired size of the bar code reader. If the investor will use the bar code readers for reading continuously, it is wise to choose readers that can be fitted inside tables for long queue of items to be scanned. If the investor needs reading for huge and bulky cargos, which often have long bar codes or bigger bar code imprints, large readers are advisable to use.

• Consider the environment where the reader will be installed. Is it for a warehouse? A shop? Or for outdoor use? Image readers are more advisable to use for outdoor utilities because these readers are more durable. In rough outdoor environments, it is usual to assume that the device maybe knocked or dropped. A laser bar code reader is recommended for a common grocery shop.

• What is the required scanning distance? If the investor is able to answer long range scanning, modern laser scanners can read bar codes up to 30 feet away. For shorter scanning, up to 10 inches, image based readers are recommended.

• Choose whether hand-held or stationary. For huge items or irregularly shaped items, it is better to use hand-held scanners. But when it comes to uniformity, stationary readers are fine.

• Budget requirement is also important. As an example of comparison, an image reader is far cheaper than a laser scanner. Yet prices should not be a determinant of efficiency. Every year newer versions of readers are sold at different prices.

There is a wide range of topics relative to bar code readers. For more information and questions, don’t hesitate to consult the bar code manufacturers or the bar code sales consultants.
