If I'm not mistaken, I remember Willie Revillame quoting in an interview that there will be a change in 2010 - the year of the howling political Philippine mongrels. It was not quite sure what he meant but the reporter assumes that this is politically motivated. Watch the report here. Ganda ng 'mga' yate!
I was, at that time, struggling with my self on tight buttons and loose socks while watching the prime time TV news of a local channel, when suddenly Willie's yachts (yup, yachts - with an 's') have been floating near the coast of the pristine Boracay island. If my memory serves me right, this report is actually just one of reports how showbiz personalities spent their Holy Week. I was awed of course of his yachts, a big one as high as a 3-storey unit and a smaller one which I suppose is used for shallow waters. In the interview, Willie stated that it is not a show of his luxurious living but just a mere relaxation time with friends aboard - after all it was Holy Week.
But what made me reflect is that when he say that there is a change in 2010. Whatever change it was, I am not quite sure. But it was assumed that it is political in nature. Well why not? First of all, he's got a circle of political actor friends that may have influenced the influential game show host. Senators Jinggoy Estrada and Bong Revilla, both of were also sons of actor politicians, were known to be his closest (and most politically powerful) friends. Think about it, if Jinggoy is in his pool, then former Pres. Joseph Estrada would just be a very cool 'tito' to him. He is also friends with actor politicians Batangas Gov. Vilma Santos-Recto, aspiring congressman Manny Pacquiao, Optical Media Board Chairman Edu Manzano, the late Rudy 'Daboy' Fernandez (a former mayoralty candidate in Quezon City), former senatorial candidate Cesar Montano and influential opposition campaign leader, the comedy king, Dolphy.
Second, ironically, this filthy rich young lolo (he's only 46 when he become grandad) has got this phenomenal appeal to the masses. Actually, he's rich enough to feed everybody in the studio audience and contestants everyday if he wanted to, but when he starts his magic, it is the audience, particularly the dollar blessed TFC subscribers, who gives dollars to the poor contestants. Even TV audiences would start calling the station and emailing the show about their pledges and donations. And why do I consider it magic? He does not even beg for it, people just wanted to give. Willie has such a wonderful and powerful convincing power - which I hope he could share some to the incumbent president.
Third, it is true for Willie that it is easier for a camel to enter the eye of a needle (I just don't know if it would be hard for him, being a rich man, to enter the gates of Heaven). My point is, he had been through a series of controversies and personal problems, but he just skipped it cunningly and swiftly. He'd been crashing with the MTRCB ever since, but he managed to clear his vulgar maniac behavior doing Willingly Yours (thanks to ABS-CBN). He'd been throwing mud with Joey de Leon (while the latter is puking bowels at him) and yet they managed to finally have a truce. The Presidential Anti-Smuggling Group (PASG) have been on the hunt of Willie's alleged Ferrari's and yet he still got away with it. The annulment case filed by his wife Liz Almoro, along with the allegation of abuse, has also been quite forgotten. The deepest impact on Willie's career might have been the ULTRA stampede (A.K.A. Wowowee Stampede) claiming 71 lives. But still, this only led to a blessing in disguise, the creation of a foundation in remembrance and for the welfare of the family of the victims (Thanks again to ABS-CBN). Willie is just one clever fox.
Finally, what is a politician without a party? Even Obama needed to persuade the Democrats to trust him. So, if Willie's going to join a political party would it be the administration (along with Revilla, Pacquiao, Santos-Recto and Montano) or with the opposition (along with the Estradas and Dolphy)? Who cares? Willie can be a senator independently like Honasan (originally non-partisan) and De Castro (before he became a VP for the administration). Actually, Willie can just join the political sides of the coin anytime or even switch parties anytime he wants to if ever. No party would be foolish enough to woo away Willie. But definitely, Willie's authentic party would be ABS-CBN, the country's premier, biggest and most powerful 'non-political' political party - as how my Art professor defines the network company. Have you imagined how many politicians have been ABS-CBN's pawns? To top the list there is VP Noli de Castro. Then there are Senators Loren Legarda and Miguel Zubiri (being a host in Studio 23), Congressmen Teddy Boy Locsin and Gilbert Remulla, Cainta Mayor Mon Ilagan, former Congressman Ted Failon, failed candidates Montano and Fernandez and many others. Have you counted how many times ABS-CBN have been saving Willie's ass from the whiplash of the likes of Armida Siguon-Reyna, Chairman Laguardia, DOJ Sec. Raul Gonzalez, BIR and PASG officers and numerous prosecutors? 2010 Elections would just be high time for ABS-CBN to launch Willie on the senatorial arena and just the right time for Willie to pay his fortune. Willie, assumingly, would not dare to concede if the Lopez's request (or campaign) for his senatorial bid.
You might ask why would Willie target the Senate and not the Lower House or the local government post instead. Why not? Willie has got the recipe for a successful politician, the charisma, the resources, the network, the strategy and the party. He does not need to be in war with the President or her family (like Escudero and Cayetano did) to become a senator.
He just needed to be himself. He could, and he would, do what Montano failed to do - earning the trust of the masses while earning the trust of the richer sectors. He had enough exposure to help the poor in his programs, Willingly Yours and Wowowee. He had convinced the migrants, overseas workers and the rich enough to lend a hand to the poor. His qualities and actions, incidentally or accidentally, are quite enough to make him earn a post in the Philippine Senate Office. And it is not just the winnability, but also his credibility in helping the masses.
How many politicians have you seen that they are pro poor? Yet, only Willie Revillame is the only public personality I know which I've seen cry for the poor (whether authentic or hypocrisy, I dont care - nobody has done that before). No matter how many pro-poor programs these politicians make, if they have no heart offered into their endeavor, all is just waste and a show worse than Chow Time. But Willy, even as rich as Bolkiah, never fail to be approachable to the poor. Through his shows (thanks again ABS-CBN!), he has helped a lot more poor people than many politicians have. He is even more rightfully to be a leader than most of those in the present senatorial and congressional scene. What the hell does the sexy cyclist and her howling brother already contribute to the country (or to Payatas at least)? What the heck does that old man want to contribute to the country but to sell the land to the foreigners by changing the constitution? Where are the voices of these so called sectoral representatives (which are actually ghost lawmakers) when all they do is to say yes (if not absent) to the majority?
Hay naku, if Willy does decide to run for national office (but please not the presidency or VP seat - he still lacks some political recipe for this), I'd be willingly be one of his supporters. The side effect of course, Wowowee could suffer the loss of its host (like Tito Sotto to Eat Bulaga - he did comeback but lost the glitter) and Happy Days, an emerging RTW line in Philippine pop culture, would begin pulling out their signature tees with the image of Willie Revillame, with caption, Our Savior. By the way, he won't be worried about the dirty mud throwing in Philippine politics, praktisado na sya kay Joey De Leon.
